Alpaca Fiber Information
Alpacas produce fine cashmere like fleece once reserved for Incan royalty. It is prized for its silky feel and superb handle. Currently, there are twenty-three recognized alpaca colors ranging from white through fawn to true black.

Alpacas need to be shorn once a year. Average fiber yield is 5 pounds from a single female and often times more than 8 pounds from a grown male. Baby alpaca fiber is known as cria fleece and is the first clipping from a young alpaca. Cria fleece is highly sought after for its extra fineness and lustrous feel. Raw alpaca fiber can sell for $2- 5 dollars an ounce depending on quality and level of processing. Cria fleece, due to its premium qualities can often sell for $5- 8 dollars an ounce.

Alpaca fiber is readily dyed and easily mixed with other fibers such as wool, mohair, and silk. The result is fabric that has superb handling, is lightweight, and is exceptional in its shape, wear ability, and thermal properties. Listed below are raw alpaca fleece available for purchase. All fleeces are from huacaya alpacas and have been weighed using a Technidyne scale. Color has been judged according to the Alpaca Registry color chart. Some fleeces may contain light vegetation.
